Love for the Saviour

Dear family and friends,

First I wanted to thank you all for the fun emails and for wishing me a Merry Christmas! There is nothing like experience Christmas on a mission and as much as I missed all the fun family traditions and seeing you all, it as a Christmas filled with the spirit of Christ stronger than it has ever been in my life. I know that the Savior lives and am so grateful for the fun Christmas time and the spirit that we can all feel so strongly! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and filled with the same wonderful spirit that I felt and that you were all happy and safe!!

After I talked to you all on Saturday, the house that we were at- the Chillogallo family fed us a fun Christmas dinner of rice, noodles, and a fun salad that has lots of vegetables! Then we got to go visit an awesome family that we found a few weeks ago. They aren`t married and the son has had problems with drugs but he was able to read the whole pamphlet of the Restoration (and then taught us the whole lesson 🙂 and received a strong answer from the Spirit! It was so awesome as he was trying to explain to us how the spirit felt and he was soooooo excited but could hardly find the words to explain how he felt. It was such a cool experience to see how the spirit had been working with him! He`s been to church the last 2 weeks with his dad and the ward christmas party!!

On Christmas morning I was so excited I could hardly stand it, so I sneaked out to our living room area and got our fun Christmas ready that mom sent! I set out the little tree with presents around it and trailed the candy from their doors! Then I started blaring the music (David Archuleta was Celine Dion`s replacement for this year) and they all came out half confused but thought it was so fun! We opened the few little presents and then made a french toast and hot chocolate breakfast before going out on visits before church!! It was such a spiritual day and fun to experience another Christmas in the Lord`s service!

Well, mostly I just want to express my gratitude and love for each of you and your support that you have all given me here in the mission. You have all helped make this an unforgettable experience! I know that the Savior lives. I know He loves each one of us. I know that Heavenly Father has a special plan for each of His children. I am so grateful for the opportunity that He has given me to serve His children here in Ecuador. These sweet people have changed my life forever and made me have a more eternal perspective. I know that if we live the gospel and endure faithfully to the end, we can be with all of those we love after this life. I am so grateful for the gospel, for my mission and for the love of the Savior that I have grown to felt so closely in my life. I am so grateful for the Spirit to be our constant guide and help and teach us everyday!

I love you all so much and am excited to see you all on Friday!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! The true meaning of Christmas!

Dearest family and friends,

Merry Merry Christmas! It truly is the most wonderful time of the year!! Thank you all so much for your love and fun letters for Christmas. I can truly feel all your love and hope that you all have a very merry christmas!! I hope you have all been able to feel the true meaning of Christmas and the love of Christ in your lives!

I`m sorry this will be so short, but it was a wonderful week!! The Christmas activity went sooo well and there were lots of people and the spirit was so strong! I truly hope that all the people there could feel the spirit and will open their hearts to the gospel.

Flor also got baptized this weekend and confirmed and it was sooo special and she seemed so happy!!!

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!!! 🙂

I love you all so much, love Hermana Hawkes

Dear family and friends,

Thank you all so much for the awesome emails and words of encouragement!! Thank you for your concern for me and for the love that I can feel through each of your emails and kind thoughts!! It is a wonderful Christmas season and I am so grateful to be a servant of the Lord at this time to help others to feel the love of our Savior and remember his birth! This is the greatest work and I love being part of it here in Ecuador! I hope that each and everyone of you are doing great, that your families are safe and healthy, and that you all know how much I love and appreciate each of you, but most importantly, how much the Savior loves each of you!

This has been a great week here in Ecuador! We have been able to work with an awesome lady named Flor. She has had a hard life and has battles a divorce, and children that have chosen paths other than the gospel, but she is so firm and ready to be baptized and lead a better life! She loves the missionaries and I think more thank she loves us, she loves the spirit that she can feel as we are in her home teaching because she feels the security and love of the gospel in her life! We had a really cool experience with her this week. She had told us that she wouldn’t be home on Friday night because she was going to visit her mom. On friday we were leaving the office after working there for the day and we called the appointment that we had set up, but they weren`t home. I had the strongest impression that we should go visit Flor. Knowing that she had told us she wouldnt be home, we went to her house anyway. When we got there, she hadn`t left yet and invited us in to share a short message with her! We were able to teach her a lesson focused on the home and family and how important FHE is to strengthen our families. At the end of the lesson we were about to leave and she asked `If i dont have a good feeling about leaving to go visit my mom at this time of night do you think that its the spirit telling me?`  She decided not to go, but it really was a small miracle that we were able to witness and I am so impressed with how well she listens to the spirit!

I was also studying in 1 Nefi 17 this week and love how faithful and obedient Nephi is! I would encourage you all to read it and have the courage to do all things that the Lord has set before us because with His help we can do all things! I love you all and hope you have an awesome week!!!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Hello my awesome family!!

How are you all doing? 🙂 I hope you are all getting into the fun Christmas spirit like I am! This morning as we were cleaning our house we put on Christmas music and I seriously can`t even believe how close Christmas is! What a fun time of year when everyone is more aware of their friends and families and how open everyone is to hearing about Christ! I am so grateful for this fun time and most of all, the time that we have to remember the Savior and His birth. How loving is our Heavenly Father that he would send His son here to earth so that we can return to live with Him! I know that Heavenly Father loves and takes care of each and every one of us!

This week was so great! We had more meetings and practices for the big event, and it has been so fun because we have a little `skit` about prophets in the bible, and then another mission is going to finish off the show by tying it into the Book of Mormon when Nephi saw Christ`s birth! I am so excited because there will be a lot of people there that aren`t members and it will be such a great time for them to learn about the Book of Mormon and feel the special spirit with the live nativity scenes and choirs! It is going to be a fun day!

This week we were also able to witness miracles here in our sector! We have been working with Flor Maza and missionaries have been working with her for about 2 months now and she just kept saying that she didn`t feel ready for baptism. We had been preparing what to teach and share this week and we finally decided that we would read 3 Nephi 11 with her, and as we were reading, we came to the topic of baptism and were able to bear testimony that she is ready and that the Lord will help her. After we bore testimony she looked at us and said, `I was actually going to tell you, but I was thinking about it and I feel ready now. I think that (the 16 of December when we extended the date) is right and that I`m ready to be baptized.` The spirit was so stong and we could tell that it truly is something she wants and has been preparing for! We were able to go visit her again last night and read D&C 20:37 with her and honestly her testimony is incredible! She is always telling us that she isn`t doing it because of anyone but herself and always has such deep thoughts and spiritual impressions! I am so grateful for her and for the oportunity we have had to work with her!

The members have also helped us find some awesome families and yesterday we went to visit one of the contacts from the members and as we were finishing teaching the family, the mom said `I had been waiting for God to send me someone to help me with my family and to help me change my life!` The Gospel is true! It changes lives and blesses so many!!! I am so grateful for the strong and loving family that we have that has always made the gospel a priority! I love you all and hope you have a fantastic week!!

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! :)

Dearest Family,

Hello hello from the Equator!! Even though the weather doesn´t quite feel like Christmas here, we are in the full swing of Christmas cheer!! I hope you are all as well and loving this special time of year that we have to share with all those around us of the love of the Savior and remember Him and all that He does for us. I know that this time of year everyone has softened hearts and more open minds and it is the best time to serve and share the glad tidings of the gospel truths that we have with everyone we possibly can!! I am so happy to hear how you are all doing and hope and pray everyday that you are all being blessed and feel happy!!

This week went by sooo fast! I feel like I blink and the week is already gone! This week was so busy with activities and meetings and visiting all the people we possibly could in our spare time!! Something so cool is that there is going to be a big Christmas activity here in Guayaquil the 17 of December in one of the biggest parks in South America (I hope that isnt a false statistic) 🙂 but it is a huge event and they asked all of the missions here in Guayaquil to participate! We are going to have live nativity scenes, 7 choirs, and a show that they are hoping will allow us to get about 1,000 references! 🙂 We are all so excited and have been so busy with the preparations, rehersals, and coordinating everything! Another Hermana and I were asked to help be in charge along with 3 elders from our mission in getting everything in our misison ready, so it has been a whirlwind of calling, coordinating, and lots more! It has been so fun and I am so grateful for the great ideas that the church has in finding new people! It is all based around the initiative for the year called ´Ilumina el Mundo´ (in spanish…. I´m not sure what it would be in english, but Kelsey sent me a link and that is the same thing we´re using)!!

Also this week we had such an awesome experience! We have been working with an Hermana named Flor. The other hermanas were working with her for so long but she never wanted to accept a baptism date because she just didnt feel like she was ready. When we started working in this area, we were visiting her a lot and tried to keep inviting her to be baptized or at least pray about the date that she should be baptized, but she didnt want to. This past week we didnt have very much time to visit her until the end of the week, but eventually went to her house on Friday. When we got there, there was just a different spirit, a different feeling. She told us that she knew we hadn´t abandonded her in that week, but without us there, she couldn’t feel the spirit as strongly and that was something she wanted. She said something like that she knew Heavenly Father was trying to send her a message and that she wants to be able to have the spirit with her at all times and feels like her baptism is closer!!! She was so humble and willing and I know that in this week she will be ready to accept a baptism date because she is feeling the true desires! The Lord truly does show us miracles in our lives everyday! They might seem small, but I know that they are miracles! I am so grateful to be here witnessing these miracles that are not only changing the lives of these wonderful Ecuadorian people, but also my life!

I love you all so much and hope you have a happy week!! I look forward to hearing form you all and pray for you all daily!!!! I love you!!

Love, Hermana Hawkes

Happy Happy Thanksgiving!

Dearest Family,

Happy happy thanksgiving this week. Wow I was trying to think of a few things to tell you all that that I`m thankful for, and the list is literally endless. First of all, I am so grateful for the gospel and for the asurety we have to be together forever! I am grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ that makes it possible for us to repent and become clean so that we can recieve these amazing gifts altogether! I am so thankful for each and everyone of you and the awesome family that we have! I know that we have been blessed to experience true happiness in our family through blessings of the gospel and hope of having this eternal relationship! I am so grateful for this opportunity that I have to be here in Ecuador teaching people of this marvelous plan that Heavenly Father has in store for them and their families and I know that the gospel truly does bless and change families and lives!!! How thankful we should all be for the many blessings Heavenly Father has given us, and continues to bless us with each and everyday!!

Also Happy anniversary to Jared and Kelsie this week!!! 🙂

We have had a crazy week here but I have been able to feel Heavenly Father`s guiding hand in everything we do!! So I am with my new companion Hna Velasco and she is seriously sooo awesome!! She is a convert and the only member in her family. She got baptized 2 years ago in March and I have seriously never heard another missionary teach with the spirit as well as she does! She has such a strong testimony and does such a great job of sharing it with others!! She has also had to work extra hard to finish her 12 week training program as a normal missionary, and do her nurse training! She worked in architecture before so had about as much nurse experinece as I did but she is doing such an awesome job and learns so fast!!

We had so many meetings all week long and only got to work in our sector at night times from about 6 until 9! It has been a fun challenge trying to get to know all the investigators in our new sector, but it is also so nice that I have already been here in this area so at least know my way around a little bit! We witnessed miracles this week!! The Luna Family got baptized!!! 🙂 It was so fun because that day before the baptism they all invited us to their house for a birthday lunch for their son Harold! We got to go each chicken and rice and sang him happy birthday and eat cake, but the best part was we asked them how they felt for the baptism and they said 100 percent!! They were so excited!! We also had another baptism that day, a 29 year old guy from our sector named Boris that the other Hermanas have been working with for a looong time!!! It was so  funny because we got to the church and the Luna family was already there and we were just waiting for Boris to arrive and all of the sudden we all looked around and said Where did Harold go??? and then the Hermanas could hear splashing…. oh no… yep, he was in the baptism font `swimming`!!!! 🙂 it was soo funny and we were all dying and Diego and Esilda were so embarrassed!!! But it was such a special service! We started without Boris because he wasn`t answering his phone, and I was so nervous that he waasnt going to come, but the Elders were so awesome and called him and reassured him that he needed to be baptized and it was the right thing, and finally he showed up! Hermana Velasco had gone into a room and prayed that he would come because we were so nervous that he wasn’t going to show up, but I know that Heavenly Father heard and answered our prayers!!

We are busy and I am loving every minute of everything I`m doing! I know that Heavenly Father knows and loves each and everyone of us individually and perfectly!! I hope that you can all feel His love this week and enjoy the awesome time that you have together this week!! I am so thankful for each of you this week and love you all sooo much! Have a great week! 🙂

The Atonement is real!

Hello from Ecuador!! How is my awesome family doing?? 🙂

It is always so fun to write you all and see what you are all doing and the fun activities that are going on!! It is also a great time to reflect upon what has happened this week and all the miracles that Heavenly Father has blessed us with! I know that miracles really exists each day in our lives if we will just look and listen for the small promptings of the Holy Ghost!

Well a few fun things that happened this week. We were able to keep working with the Luna Family! They are so awsome and are progressing so well and we can truly see their love for the gospel! This week we tried to visit them with a lot of member families to help them feel very loved and to have lots of friends in church! They are going to be getting baptized this Saturday! It was an awesome experience because we had to postpone the baptism for a week to help them with some of the commandments, but when we went to visit them later in the week, they were so determinded and said that they would have no trouble in keeping the commandments now, and it was so incredible to me to be able to see the Atonement work so completely and so quickly for them and for their determination to change and do what`s right!

We also had a really cool experience with a girl named Danixa this week! Danixa is a 20 year old girl that is in college and lives here with her mom and brothers. Her neighbor is a member and 2 weeks ago showed up to church with Danixa and her family because she said that she had had a dream about Danixa and knew that she needed to invite her to church, and they went! We went to her house a few days later to visit her and when she opened the door, she was crying. Her eyes were super red and it looked like she had been crying really hard. She invited us in and we started talking to her and found out that her mom has cancer. She tries to be so strong but it is taking a toll on her and she was pretty sad. We just shared with her that Heavenly Father loves her and her family so much and that He has an eternal plan for her and her family. We were able to testify to her that she can feel happy through the Atonement and that Christ knows exactly how she feels. By the end of the lesson she thanked us and said that we had helped her feel a lot more calm and that she knew we had been sent to her house for a reason. I could truly feel the spirit in the lesson and knew that we had been sent there to help a special daughter of God in a time of need! I am so grateful that Heavenly Father blesses us with theses experiences each day and am so grateful fot the time that I have to be here!!

Today we had transfers and I am now with Hermana Velasco. She has 6 weeks in the mission and is so excited to work and find! I love her excitment and love for the work and know it will be such a great help in the work at this time! She is also going to be a new misison nurse so it will be so fun to help her with that!!!

I love you all and hope you have a great and safe week and enjoy each and every experience you are having!!! I love you!!

Love, Hermana Hawkes

A time of learning and love

Dear Family,

Wow what a fun week you have all had! I loved all the picrures you all sent me! I am so excited for all the new events you are all starting and am excited to hear how they all go!! Good luck in basketball to all this week! Good job Garr in your football game! it sounds like you played absolutely incredibly!! And the pictures were so fun to see of Raelynn`s blessing! What a fun time to all be together! 🙂 Families are the best!

Well this was an awesome week!! I have truly been able to feel the Lord teaching me in so many different ways and am grateful that He loves us enough to help us change and love the circumstances we are in and the people that are around us. I can honestly say that He blesses each and every one of us and those we are around when we seek to serve and love them!!

This week we were so blessed to have Diego and Esilda Loor in church again! Esilda went to visit her family in Manabi and they put a lot of doubts in her mind about the church and her baptism, but they were still happy and willing to go to church and I know that this week we will be able to help them strengthen thier testimonies and prepare for this Saturday for their baptism! I feel so much love for them and their 2 cute little boys and know that they need the gospel so much in their lives.

We were also so blessed to find another  big family this week and 4 of them went to church and really seemed to like it! THeir names are the Granados family and they are sooo fun! THe little girl named Tatiana always comes running up to give me a great big hug! I will have to send you a fun picture of them next week!!

This week will be fun and busy preparing for 20 new missionaries that arrive next week!! I will let you know how it goes! Well, I hope you all have a wonderful week and know that I love you all soo much and am so grateful for each and everyone of you in my life!! have a fantastic week!!!

This is a little piece of what I wrote to President SAntos this week and wanted to share it with you!

Spiritually fulfilling week!

Dearest family,

Happy Halloween!! How are you all doing?? 🙂 Thank you all so much for the fun stories and pictures!! I love all the fun costumes and hope that all the big kids dressed up as well… 😉 Good job Garr in your big game!! I got chills just reading about it and just know that I`m cheering you on from here!! Good luck this week!!!

Happy happy birthday to mom this week!! I hope you have an awesome day and I know everyone at home will take great care of you! I`m sending a warm wish to you from Ecuador!! 🙂

Well, we had another amazing week here! The Lord is truly blessing us and I am so grateful to be here on the frontlines to see the miracles that He has prepared for these awesome families each and everyday!

So this week was so busy but soo much fun!! On tuesday they called us and we needed to go to an appointment with an elder that sprained his ankle, so we got all ready and got to the clinic…. and they told us that it was for a different day! ahah they were just trying my patience I think! Then we got to go to the office and organize all the medicine and nurse stuff we have there for Elder Montoya who was going to come to the office.

Wednesday I probably attended the neatest conference I have ever been to. Elder Montoya of the area presidency came and it was so great because we had been preparing by reading 3 different talks that they sent us so we all went with questions! He talked a lot ot us about promising blessings and the power and authority that we have now as missionaries and how great it is that we can promise blessings to the people we teach and to the members! This is the only time in my life that I will be able to promise blessings and it made me stop an think of what an amazing opportunity this is! He gave us some time to ask questions and I got to ask a question. The question I asked was something about how we can develop the kind of faith that allows us to see miracles. He responded and said that we are representatives of Jesus Christ. We have the power and authority to work miracles in the name of christ. We just have to believe in Him with alllllll of our heart and pray that we can see these miracles and then go out and work! It was such a neat experience!!

We have also continuted to work with the Luna family!! They are so much fun and I love going to visit them! The dad Diego finally received his answer about everything! We were teaching him about listening to the spirit in 3 Nephi 11 and after he said, I know that I have felt the spirit. It is so clear to me because the way I treat my family and the way I feel about them is different and I feel a new peace here in my home! It was such a great experience and I am so grateful for the way the spirit works in each of us in the way that Heavenly Father knows will help us belive!

I love you all and  hope you have an aweomse week!!

Love Hermana Hawkes

` You don`t find the happy life, you make it! `

An awesome scripture I found this week-  Moroni 7:41

Love you all!!

We had a conference with Elder Montoya this week!! AHh it was soo awesome!

Making empanadas with Esilda Luna

Eating ice cream with my companions today!!

Week of miracles!

Dear Family,

First of all, Happy happy birthday Dad and Grandma Griffeth!! 🙂

Wow what a great week!! I`m sorry I wont have time to respond to your emails today, but I have some really cool experiences that have happened this week and wanted to be able to share them with all of you!! It truly was a great week and I know that the Lord is blessing us here in our sector!

Ok so first I will start out with monday and wednesday. They have put together a choir because Elder Montoya is coming this wednesday and they asked me to sing! We have been having practices twice a week for the last 3 weeks and we are so excited to sing when he comes! I will try to see if I can have someone video it and send it next week because the songs are sooo pretty! 🙂
So, on Wednesday, I worked in the mission office with Hermana Roylance like we do every Wednesday and Friday! We are always updating lists, making appointments, looking up different treatments that missionaries can use, and right now we are scheduling vaccines for the flu for the WHOLE mission!! That will be a big task! 🙂 But after we got done in the office at around 6 I got to go out with a member lady in our ward so that my companions could cover some other appointments! I have been going out with members a lot in the last few weeks to take advantage of being in a treesome and getting to find more people. Well that night I hate to say that I wasn`t too excited to go out without my companions again, and much less because I was going to go look for some contacts that we had only taught one time and didnt really know them. So we got to the lesson with the Family Caamaño (the contact) and we started teaching them about the Restoration! They were fascinated!!! The member that was with me shared some great scriptures and even a part from The proclamation for the family! When we were teaching about the apostacy, they said `hey that is what we are in our lives right now!` As we finished the lesson with them we could all feel the spirit so strong! The Hermano told us that it was a miracle that we arrived at their house because they need this in their lives, and it really is a miracle because the wife usually doesnt let religious people in! It was such a blessing from Heavenly Father and really boosted my spirits that day!! They have a lot of problems in their family and a lot of doubts, but they were able to attend church for an hour and seemed to like it!
Ok second miracle of the week, we were able to continue teaching the Luna family that I told about last week! AHh they are sooooo awesome!! They are so humble and willing to learn and change their lives! We taught them about the plan of salvation and they were intrigued!! Diego`s mom died just a few months ago, and he seemed soo happy to know where his mom is and that he can see her again! Then the next day we went back and taught them and invited them to be baptized! They accepted and Esilda was so excited because she had had a dream about an angel surrounding her family and protecting them and knew that it was all true. Diego was a little bit more hesitant, but it is because he said that he doesnt want to make any mistakes after his baptism and make sure that he has truly repented before he is baptised! We invited them to be baptized on November 5 and they said that Esilda was going to go on a trip next week and would have all her attendances before the 5th. Yesterday after church she told us that it doesnt matter what happens, she wants to get baptized on the 5th and is going to change her plans for her trip! They are such a special family and we are so grateful that the Lord has blessed us with this awesome opportunity to teach and find families! I know that the families are so important to our Heavenly Father and know that the only way to have true happiness in this live and in the eternities is with our families!!
I hope you all have an awesome week! I love you all soo much and pray for you always! 🙂

Love, Hermana Hawkes
